JUDD Nouveau Cast Iron Polychrome Book Rack Bookends Sliding Bookslide
A lovely polychromed cast iron Art Nouveau book rack or slide, almost certainly made by the J.H. Judd Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut who made a decorative art metal line of fine-quality sand castings in iron, brass and bronze. Among these items were bookends and book racks, produced from 1910 into the 1930s. Judd marked their book ends with a 9000 series number; this piece is marked “9803”. Their pieces are considered to be some of the highest quality iron pieces seen, having great attention to detail, high-quality paint techniques, and durable construction.
Each end piece measures 6-1/4″ across and 4-1/2″ high. It’s non-extended width is 12-1/4″ (inside measurement). The triple-railed rack extends to 22″, so it can hold a lot of books, CDs, etc. It’s in very good condition cosmetically with some expect loss to paint but does not deter from the beauty of this book slide. When extending it, is a little stiff but it does with a little effort and would probably ease up with use.
